Christopher Information Technology Specialist I'm a systems analyst, programming in COBOL, using JCL, which is Job Control Language, to actually control the linkage of multiple programs and different run dates, and so forth. The position I'm in is a Federal Career Intern Program, which is for newly graduates. And what this does is it gets you your foot in the door, where you can get into a government position, have the same benefits. It's a two-year program, where I only have six months left. 90% of the time, my day is consistent. I have a set schedule on what needs to be done by certain dates and times. But other days when there is, say a power outage, or something like that where our servers go down, I have to make sure all the information still gets sent out on time. Or I have to make sure that certain programs that are only ran once every month or once every six months is running properly. You actually have to love your job.You have to like what you do. You have to understand the job of a developer. You have to be able to communicate between multiple sources via telephone, e-mail, face to face, hold meetings, make sure that you have a clear understanding before you go develop anything. I can see management, or staying a developer. I love developing.
