Joseph Supervisory Contract Specialist I’m a Supervisory Contract Specialist in the Office of Procurement and my job entails managing and leading a team of 30 Contract Specialists. We award some of the IRS’ most important contracts so our work is really important to the success of the IRS. The contracts that we do out of what we call the National Office of Procurement, those contracts tend to be nationwide in scope, so we interact with people all across the IRS and all across the country really. To come in as an entry-level Contract Specialist you need a Bachelor’s degree in any field or 24 hours of Business credits. To come in as a senior level Contract Specialist, you would need a Bachelor’s degree with 24 business credits and 4 years of experience in a contracting related field. The IRS offers great benefits. Educational benefits for one, lots of training opportunities, but we also have excellent annual leave and sick leave benefits –we have a great health care package. Our schedules in Procurement typically allow us to work a 40-hour week. On occasion there’s some overtime required, but it’s not excessive and it’s really easy to achieve a great work/life balance in our roles. Just in the 15 years I’ve been with IRS, only in the Office of Procurement, I’ve held four different positions and I’ve been given a phenomenal amount of training. I really like working at the IRS because of the people, the atmosphere and the challenging work that we do. I also believe that what we do is critically important and I like the nature of the projects that I’ve worked on.
