Rahul Computer Scientist My job title is Computer Scientist. As the name sort of implies, I do work relating to computers as they apply to tax processing/tax data processing. It’s a research position. My job involves finding creative ways to go through all the data and find noncompliance or maybe come up with ways of better serving the taxpayer. Anything that is new, that applies new computer science techniques to problems that IRS faces. I never knew the federal government had positions like these. When you think of IRS you think of people who audit you and process your tax returns. But the IRS has a whole office of research which does research work and applies really advanced computer science techniques to tax processing. So there are lots of opportunities -opportunities that one doesn’t know really exist. There’s a wide range of possibilities. If you like to develop software you’ve got opportunities to develop software. If you like to upgrade, if you like to maintain computers, if you like to take care of the IT needs, there are plenty of opportunities for IT professionals. Technology is evolving everyday and the IRS recognizes that. It has given us the opportunity to go and learn newer technologies, new languages, new tools and apply them to the problems it’s trying to solve.
