Wendell Data Transcriber A data transcriber takes a physical return and inputs it into the computer system for further processing. They have to take all of the information that is relevant which most of is applied by the taxpayer, some of is applied later on after it is received by the IRS, interpret that information, and put it in the appropriate database. After I graduated from college, I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, relocated to a city with a heavy IRS presence, and right when I moved they were taking a lot of applications for seasonal employees and I pretty quickly got the job as a seasonal DT - that’s code for Data Transcriber. Then after a year I was very lucky in that I got one of the very coveted, permanent positions and so that’s where I am now, and I hope to keep on that track. What I really like is that it’s a very critical function that a lot of people don’t know about. The requirements to be a Data Transcriber, you must have a high school diploma and be able to type 25 WPM which will be verified by a test and have probably one year of outside experience. General but specific data transcription experience would be preferred. The first thing I would tell any new or potential IRS employee is to just bring a really positive attitude, work really hard, and you can go as far as you want to go. There are all kinds of different jobs in the agency and also you can build a really successful career out of it. The IRS just like a lot of organizations prefers to promote from within – people who are familiar with the work that’s going on and everything like that. They have several of programs for internal advancement for going through management, for going through career development if you don’t want to be a manager and everyone is encouraged to take part in those because they keep things inside – people who know work, minimizes training, and makes things more efficient. Well I have excellent health care coverage. I have the full medical, dental, and vision. My particular facility has onsite daycare, secured parking. I have an excellent flexible schedule to where I could adjust it if I needed to go to school or if I need to adjust it for a four day work week I can do that, I have that option. I have a lot of different opportunities that I don’t think I would get in the private sector.
