As an Appeals Officer, you will lead conferences to resolve disputes in which taxpayers have appealed IRS determinations or have filed petitions with the US Tax Court. You'll research and apply the tax law to complicated facts and policy questions. You may consult experts in highly technical areas to address specialized issues and ensure cases are fully developed. Appeals Officers maintain professionalism and impartiality while working with taxpayers, representatives and colleagues, negotiating fair settlements based on the facts, the law and the hazards of litigation.  

As an Appeals Team Case Leader, you will lead teams of Appeals Officers and specialists reviewing disputes involving multiple complex tax issues. These cases typically involve the nation's largest companies and wealthiest taxpayers. As an expert in your field, you will demonstrate extensive experience resolving complex and novel issues. You’ll join a team of peers dedicated to professionalism, technical expertise, and resolving federal tax controversies without litigation.

You'll need to demonstrate that you have:

  • Knowledge of accounting principles
  • Knowledge of negotiation and settlement practices and principles
  • Knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code, related rulings, regulations and court decisions
